From Aspiration to Opportunity: Qumasha’s Skills for Work Journey

Qumasha, a dedicated mother of two from the local community, joined Skills for Work while unemployed and volunteering in a nursery. With previous experience in care and a strong ambition to build a better future for her family, she was eager to move into a career as a Teaching Assistant, a role that would allow her to balance work with her family commitments. However, like most adult learners, she faced a key barrier:  She did not yet have the formal qualifications needed to enter work in the education sector.

Determined to achieve her goal, Qumasha enrolled on the ESOL Entry Level 2 course to improve her English skills. The flexible, part-time structure of the programme (two hours in class alongside home study) enabled her to continue learning without disrupting her busy family life. Alongside her course, she has accessed a wide range of additional support, including careers advice, CV writing, interview preparation, and progression opportunities such as Maths, ICT, and Teaching Assistant qualifications.

Qumasha’s experience has been both positive and transformative. The supportive learning environment at Skills for Work has helped her grow in confidence and strengthened her belief that her goals are achievable. She is now planning her next steps, including further qualifications to support her progression into employment.

“I really enjoy my course. It has helped me build confidence in my English and believe that I can achieve the qualifications I need for my future. The flexible timetable works perfectly around my family life, and I feel supported every step of the way.”

Looking ahead, Qumasha’s ambition is to secure a paid role as a Teaching Assistant. She believes Skills for Work is helping her move closer to that goal by providing the training, support, advice, and guidance she needs.

“Joining Skills for Work was the right decision for me. I can study different subjects, gain qualifications, and access support and careers advice all in one place. I have also made friendships along the way, which makes the experience even more special.”

Qumasha’s journey is a powerful example of how the right support, combined with determination, can help learners overcome barriers, build confidence, and take meaningful steps toward a brighter future.
